Marking the historic milestone of the nation’s 80th Independence Day, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha unfurled the Tricolour at Lok Bhavan in Srinagar on Saturday, leading the Union Territory in solemn remembrance and renewed national commitment. The ceremony commenced against the scenic backdrop of the Kashmir Valley with a smartly turned-out ceremonial police contingent presenting the National Salute, accompanied by the resounding strains of the National Anthem. The occasion brought together senior administrative officials, police brass, heads of security forces, community leaders, and distinguished citizens to commemorate eight decades of sovereign India.
Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor reflected on the long, arduous journey that secured the country’s sovereignty, paying profound homage to the freedom fighters who braved immense hardship to liberate India from colonial rule. In his address, he also took a somber moment to express solidarity with the families of civilians who tragically lost their lives during recent natural calamities and weather-related disasters across the Union Territory, acknowledging the resilience displayed by local communities in the face of adversity.
“On this historic day, I join all citizens in paying heartfelt tributes to our founding fathers and the valiant sons and daughters of Mother India who sacrificed their lives for country’s freedom. Let us strive to realize their cherished dreams of building a peaceful, prosperous Jammu Kashmir and a great nation. The truest tribute we can pay to our martyrs and freedom fighters is to resolve to work with integrity and safeguard our hard-earned freedom,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
Outlining a broader strategic perspective for the region and the country, Sinha expressed strong confidence in India’s ascent on the international stage, noting that the nation stands on the threshold of establishing itself as a leading global power. He emphasized that sustained national progress depends fundamentally on social cohesion, urging citizens across all walks of life to unite in fostering an inclusive social fabric that places the public interest above narrow considerations and extends institutional compassion to marginalized and underprivileged communities.
Delving into the core priorities of regional governance, the Lieutenant Governor highlighted socio-economic transformation as central to long-term peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. He underscored that inclusive development requires deliberate investment in human capital, ecological protection, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
“Let us strive for balanced growth and the economic empowerment of women to build a more humane and compassionate society. We must prioritize empowering women and youth, generating jobs and ensuring environmental sustainability. Our ongoing initiatives, such as revitalizing heritage sites, restoring ancient monuments and undertaking massive afforestation drives, stand as a testament to our steadfast commitment to sustainable development,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
Connecting the administration’s development roadmaps with broader national goals, Sinha called upon every citizen of the Union Territory to actively participate in realizing the vision of a self-reliant Jammu Kashmir and a Viksit Bharat by 2047, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He reiterated that transparent, citizen-centric, and accountable governance remains non-negotiable for achieving equitable economic expansion, modern infrastructure, and institutional integrity across both urban centers and remote rural pockets.
The Lieutenant Governor also congratulated the personnel of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) who were conferred gallantry medals and meritorious service decorations on the eve of Independence Day. He commended their unyielding vigil, bravery, and sacrifice in safeguarding internal security, preserving peace, and protecting national sovereignty in challenging environments. Alongside the security forces, Sinha lauded local athletes and sportspersons whose recent competitive triumphs on national and international stages have brought immense pride to Jammu and Kashmir, serving as powerful role models for the younger generation.
Concluding the morning’s celebrations, Sinha urged the people of the Union Territory to renew their pledge toward nation-building with heightened dedication, integrity, and shared purpose, ensuring that the legacy of India’s freedom movement continues to guide Jammu and Kashmir toward enduring peace, inclusive prosperity, and sustainable growth.
