Srinagar: An Awareness Program was held at the Traffic Rural Kashmir Office on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of Ravinder Pal Singh-JKPS (SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir). The event saw participation from approximately 90 representatives, including Chairmen, Presidents, Managers, and other officials from various Transport Associations and Sumo Stands across the rural districts of Kashmir, including Anantnag, Baramulla, Kupwara, Kulgam, Budgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Ganderbal, and Bandipora.
The program primarily addressed complaints of overcharging, especially at popular tourist spots and major roadways in rural Kashmir. Participants were urged to halt such practices and ensure drivers at their respective stands comply with the guidelines provided. They were also briefed on the importance of avoiding overloading, speeding, and negligent driving—factors that contribute significantly to road fatalities. Attendees were reminded to carry valid documents, including driver’s licenses and fitness certificates, in compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act. They were advised that failure to adhere to these regulations would result in legal action.
Furthermore, participants were informed that unregistered Sumo Stands will not be permitted to operate unless officially registered through the Transport Commissioner of J&K. Drivers were also instructed to maintain respectful behavior with passengers and to strictly follow operational norms.
Participants voiced their grievances, which were acknowledged with assurances of timely resolution. In closing, Sh. Ravinder Pal Singh commended the participants for their involvement and encouraged district-wise awareness meetings to further reinforce compliance with the program’s directives.
The participants unanimously agreed to hold additional district-wide awareness meetings involving transporters to ensure adherence to the safety guidelines established during this program.
