BY KS NEWS DESK

A new beginning of planting trees in the memory of martyrs, the campaign saw a significant number of plantations across the region. That would serve as an homage to those who had laid down their lives for the nation.

With few meaningful initiatives in memory of martyrs who laid down their lives for the country, the Independence Day celebrations in Jammu & Kashmir were an eventful affair this year. One of the prominent features is the launching of a campaign “Ek Ped Shaheedon Ke Naam,” which means planting trees for the martyrs. A large number of trees were planted under this initiative in memory and, thereby, signifying a gesture of tribute towards those who laid down their lives for the country.

The campaign shall be implemented across India, including Jammu & Kashmir, as a part of a larger pan-India campaign, which is a commitment by the government to recognize the ultimate sacrifice of the country’s heroes through an environment-friendly gesture.

In another development, Jammu & Kashmir administration launched the initiative for renaming several educational institutions, bridges, sports stadiums, and public squares after martyred police and security forces personnel. This was done to perpetuate the memory of these valiant men in the daily lives of the people.

Prior to this, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had directed the deputy commissioners and senior officers of the civil and police administration to hold a high-level meeting regarding the preparations for Independence Day celebrations. Speaking during the said meeting, LG Sinha said, “All stakeholders must work together to facilitate people’s active participation and ensure meticulous planning of activities and events to pay tributes to freedom fighters, unsung heroes and the martyrs.”

He also directed officials to organize “Swachhta Pakhwada” (Cleanliness Fortnight) from August 1 to 14. The Lieutenant Governor further said that the concerned departments should begin the “Ek Ped Shaheedon Ke Naam” campaign from prominent places of public utility and memorials, in order to raise the importance of this homage.

The LG said, “This campaign of paying tributes to martyrs through the plantation of trees should become a mass movement all over Jammu and Kashmir. Every citizen, every family, and all leading personalities of society from different walks of life must unite to make the campaign a success.”
