In a remarkable display of commitment to infrastructure development, the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has seen unprecedented progress since its reorganization. The strategic focus on road and bridge infrastructure projects has not only enhanced connectivity but has also been a catalyst for economic growth and employment generation.

The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), a flagship programme aimed at connecting rural habitations, has witnessed significant strides in Jammu and Kashmir. With over 99% of the sanctioned programme already achieved, the UT has connected 2107 habitations, covering a substantial 18336 kilometers of road length against the sanctioned programme. The PMGSY Progress from 2019 to 2024 reflects a consistent upward trajectory, with J&K consecutively ranking 3rd at the national level in terms of road length constructed.

Under the NABARD Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF), Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a record number of 1057 road and bridge projects sanctioned since 2019-20, amounting to Rs. 4550 crores. Notably, during 2022-23, the UT spent more than Rs. 500 crores in a single financial year, underscoring a significant boost in infrastructure investment.

The Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) has also played a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of state roads. With 294 major road and bridge projects sanctioned since 2000, amounting to Rs. 4315 crores, the UT has seen considerable progress. Notably, the yearly utilization of funds and completion of projects under CRIF have improved considerably in the last three years.

The Macadamization programmes have been instrumental in ensuring better road surfaces, particularly in cities, towns, and major district roads. From 2017 to 2020, a total macadamization of 9252 kilometers was achieved, while from 2020 to 2023, the figure soared to 16807 kilometers, showcasing a substantial leap in infrastructure development efforts.

Bridges have been a crucial component of road connectivity in the region, given its topography and abundance of rivers and streams. With 338 bridges under construction and 290 completed in the last five years, Jammu and Kashmir has made significant strides in enhancing accessibility and reducing travel time.

The Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) has been a game-changer, with projects like the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway, tunnels, flyovers, and bypasses aimed at further boosting connectivity and infrastructure in the UT.

The comprehensive infrastructure development initiatives undertaken in Jammu and Kashmir underscore a holistic approach towards economic growth, employment generation, and overall societal progress. As the region continues its journey towards prosperity, these infrastructure investments are expected to yield long-term dividends for the people of the Union Territory.
