In the art-rich valley of Kashmir, Rakshanda’s journey stands as a symbol of the revival of Kashmiri artistry. It embodies unwavering resilience and boundless creativity. Rakshanda’s journey is more than just entrepreneurship; it epitomizes the indomitable spirit of a woman who pursued her passion and built a thriving business. Rakshanda’s Artistic Odyssey
Rakshanda’s roots trace back to Banihal, where she completed her schooling. Afterward, she pursued her education at Women’s College. “After completing my graduation, I embarked on a new chapter as a wife and mother. The responsibilities of raising children and managing a household paused my studies temporarily, but it also ignited the entrepreneurial spark within me. I found a way to balance both worlds and pursue my passion for promoting Kashmiri art” Rakshanda said.
Setting stage for her remarkable journey, Rakshanda says “two years ago, I ventured into the world of fashion by launching my own apparel store, aptly named “Rakshanda’s,” in the bustling area of Sanat Nagar, Srinagar”.
“My focus has always been on preserving and promoting the rich legacy of Kashmiri art, particularly through exquisite Kashmiri shawls and a blend of Pakistani and Indian wear”, she said.
What sets her apart is her unwavering commitment to taking this art beyond borders. “I organized exhibitions in foreign countries to breathe new life into Kashmiri art, and the response has been overwhelming. People from around the world admire and cherish her products”, she said.
“My exhibitions have left imprints worldwide, from Dubai to Hong Kong, Jakarta to various cities in India”, she added.
“Kashmiri shawls and traditional wear have a timeless appeal. My prime focus is to take this rich heritage beyond borders and share it with the world. Exhibitions in foreign countries have been a testament to our art’s global allure”, she said.
With a profound commitment to the preservation of Kashmir’s rich artistic heritage, she says that our mission isn’t solely about commerce; it’s about sustaining a heritage and ensuring that those involved in this art form thrive. Besides, she recognizes the importance of generating employment opportunities and contributing to her community’s economic growth.
“It’s not just a business; it’s a commitment to preserving our rich craftsmanship. Every product from ‘Rakshanda’s’ carries a piece of our heritage” she said.
In an ever-evolving fashion industry, Rakshanda says “I adapt and excel in crafting designs that resonate with modern trends while preserving the essence of traditional art. My passion for craft is evident, and it’s this fervor that has fueled my journey”.
“I strive to create designs that embrace modern trends while honoring our rich traditions. It’s about bringing the best of both worlds to our customers” she said.
One pivotal moment that ignited my business idea was when people abroad marveled at my ethnic Kashmiri attire. They were fascinated by its uniqueness and the artistry woven into every thread. This encouraged me to embark on this entrepreneurial path and showcase Kashmiri art to the world, she said.
Speaking about Kashmir’s rich art heritage, Rakshanda emphasized that Kashmiri art possesses a magnetic charm that transcends borders, attracting buyers not only from within India but also from across the globe.
“My customer base extends far beyond the homeland, with orders pouring in from foreign countries and domestic tourists who visit her showroom, captivated by the fusion of ethnic art and modernity”, she said.
“Our art has a magnetic charm that transcends borders. It’s not just about selling products; it’s about preserving a legacy that has enchanted people from across the globe”, she added.
Speaking about the meticulous selection of fabrics, Rakshanda says “my approach aligns perfectly with her customers’ preferences. I often handpick materials and even customize designs to cater to unique tastes”.
Echoing the spirit of independence and resilience, Rakshanda said that I believe that strong women can conquer any challenge and should stand firmly on their own feet.
Advocating for women’s economic independence, she encourages them to embrace opportunities like those provided by government schemes, including JKEDI and other employment-related programs.
“I believe in the power of women’s economic independence. They are strong and capable. Schemes like JKEDI and others are empowering women to take control of their lives and contribute to our society.”
“A strong woman can face any difficulty and stand independently. My message to all women is to believe in themselves and explore the opportunities available”, she added.
Crediting her family, who played an integral role in her success, she emphasized that they have served as pillars of support, providing unwavering encouragement and faith in her abilities, which were essential drivers of her accomplishments.
