Nestled amidst the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir, the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Srinagar epitomizes the fusion of tradition and modernity. Dr. Javid Ahmad Wani, the esteemed Director of NIFT Srinagar, provides insights into the institute’s overarching mandate and primary objectives. Established in 1986, NIFT has been at the forefront of fashion education in India, shaping professional human resources for the textile and apparel industry. The institute’s significance was underscored in 2006 when it gained statutory status through an Act of the Indian Parliament, with the President of India as the ‘Visitor.’ With a network of 18 campuses spanning the nation, including the scenic Ompora, Budgam, and Jammu & Kashmir, NIFT has extended its influence across the country. Notably, NIFT has evolved beyond academia, serving as a knowledge service provider to Union and State governments, particularly in the realms of design development and the positioning of handlooms and handicrafts.
Dr. Wani highlights, “At NIFT Srinagar, our motive is to provide a learning experience of the highest standards in fashion, drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of arts and crafts of J&K.” This philosophy forms the cornerstone of NIFT Srinagar’s approach, integrating local artistic traditions with contemporary fashion education.
NIFT Srinagar’s Progress and Milestones
The journey of NIFT Srinagar began in 2016 with the introduction of academic programs, setting the stage for transformative growth. Dr. Wani recounts the institute’s early days, commencing with B. Des Fashion Design and Fashion Communication programs from a Temporary Campus in Rangreth, Srinagar. However, since assuming the role of Director in 2020, Dr. Wani has spearheaded a pivotal transition – the expedited construction of a permanent campus in Ompora, Budgam. This monumental accomplishment culminated in August 2022 when NIFT Srinagar proudly inaugurated its permanent campus, marking a significant milestone in the institute’s evolution.
In addition to the new campus, NIFT Srinagar expanded its academic offerings, introducing two new programs—B. Des Fashion and Life Style Accessories, and Masters in Fashion Management. The institute’s commitment to growth is unwavering, with plans to launch a B. Des program in Textile Design in July 2023 and aspirations for three additional programs the following year. Remarkably, NIFT Srinagar has doubled its student strength in just two years, a testament to its growing influence and appeal.

These initiatives, sponsored by the J&K Government through the Directorate of Handloom & Handicrafts, manifest NIFT’s commitment to cultural preservation and economic empowerment.
“As I said, we have a strong focus on the revival, promotion, development, and preservation of the handlooms and handicrafts of the region. Wherever we feel that there is a gap, we do come forward with our expertise to solve the problems of society”, Wani said.
He further says that the institute has been involved in designing packaging for crafts of J&K, craft documentation for registration under the GI Act, design diversification in embroidery etc. All these initiatives were sponsored by the J&K Govt through the Directorate of Handloom & Handicrafts. Additionally, NIFT Srinagar has played a pivotal role in securing Geographical Indication (GI) tagging for various cherished Kashmiri products.
